Look for a sign for the preserve just past the bridge, on the side of the road. Park along the road at the trailhead. The path is very well-maintained, making it easy to follow. The farthest edge of the loop will provide plenty of beautiful views of the surrounding creek: Butler Mill Branch. Something to keep in mind for this trail before arriving is that it is not wheelchair accessible. There are also no amenities at the site. Like most trails, you will want to bring some bug spray and dress appropriately. The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control manages the preserve.

Named after William B. Barnes, who served as a role model in the conservation field, Barnes was adamant about having the area frequently maintained. He was particularly keen on preserving the surrounding woodland and tidal marshes. In 1983, he donated 23 acres of land to Delaware State Parks, creating the Barnes Woods Nature Preserve. Historical research suggests that the property may have been designated as a wood lot by the beginning of the nineteenth century.

At Barnes Woods Nature Preserve, you can expect to see many canopy tree species such as white oak, southern red oak, American beech, loblolly pine, and mockernut hickory. Signs along the trail will help you identify some trees by the leaves, bark, or fruit.

Dogs are not allowed in the preserve.

No entrance
