Idylwild Nature Trail provides one of the more adventurous hikes in the Nanticoke River region. The trail loops in several directions. This is a multi-use trail, so you may encounter pedestrians, horses, bikes, and small vehicles in designated hunting areas. Parking consists of dirt lots with large potholes. There are no amenities at the site, though the trail is free to enter.
The Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife, and Heritage Service (WHS) purchased this property in 1937 as a refuge for wildlife. This 520-acre land was originally named Idylwild Refuge, a fenced area that prohibited hunting. Over the years, the WHS has purchased surrounding areas, adding 3,577 acres as of 2021. WHS are currently developing a 15-year plan to establish long-term goals to promote sustainability and protect habitats.
A 3,800-acre area with plenty of wildlife and beautiful views, Idylwild Nature Trail has many terrains such as forests, open fields, and sandy areas. The north end has plenty of ponds, permits fishing, and is an ideal location for birdwatching. However, you will want to be cautious and wear blaze during hunting seasons. The paths are maintained but not easy to navigate due to a lack of markings. In addition, vegetation can also be high during warm-weather months. Be sure to dress appropriately and/or bring plenty of bug spray because biting insects are very prominent in the area.
